Borrow, Debt, Interest, Lend, Owe, Usury

Borrow: Greek daneizo = to put out at interest

1.    Matthew 5:42 “Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”

Debt: Greek opheilo = that which is owed

1.    Proverbs 22:26 “Do not be one of those who is surety for debts. (co-signer)”

2.    Matthew 6:12 “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

3.    Matthew 18:30 “And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.”

4.    Luke 7:41 “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.”

5.    Luke 16:5 “So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?”

Interest & Usury: Greek tokos interest

1.    Deuteronomy 23:19 “Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of anything that is lent upon usury.”

2.    Deuteronomy 23:20 “Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.”

3.    Matthew 25:27 “You ought to have deposited my money with the bankers and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.”

4.    Luke 19:23 “Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?”

Lend: Greek daneizo = to make a loan

1.    Deuteronomy 15:7, 8 “If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.”

2.    Deuteronomy 24:10-13 “When thou dost lend thy brother anything, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge.  Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee.  And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God.”

3.    Psalms 112:5 “A good man sheweth favor, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.”

4.    Proverbs 19:17 “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”

5.    Proverbs 22:7 “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

Owe: Greek opheilo = indebted

1.    Matthew 18:24 “And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.”

2.    Matthew 18:28 “But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.”

3.    Luke 7:41 “There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.”
