PERSECUTION OF THE CHURCH
Matthew 5:10
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:12
“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the
same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Matthew 16:21-26
“From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go
to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief
priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on
the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke
him. Never, Lord, he said. This shall never happen to you! Jesus turned
and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me;
you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men. Then
Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone would come after, he must deny
himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants
to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find
it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet
forfeits his soul?”
Matthew 24:9-13
“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death,
and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time
many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each
other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because
of the increase of wickedness, the love of many will grow cold, but he who
stands firm to the end will be saved.”
Matthew 25:35-36
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty
and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited
me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you
looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Luke 22:14-20
“When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he
said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I
suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat again until it finds
fulfillment in the kingdom of God. After taking the cup, he gave thanks and
said, Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink
again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And he took
bread, gave thanks and broke, and gave it to them, saying, this is my body
given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the
supper he took the cup, saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood,
which is poured out for you.”
John 5:16
“So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews
persecuted him. Jesus said to them, My Father is always at his work to this
very day, and I, too, am working. For this reason the Jews tried all the
harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even
calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”
John 15:20
“Remember the word I said to you: The servant is not greater than his lord.
If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you;”
Acts 12:4
“And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and
delivering into prisons both men and women.”
Romans 5:2
“And not only so, we glory in tribulations also: knowing that
tribulation worketh patience;”
Romans 8:35-39
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation,
or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword...Nay, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,
nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor
height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able
to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 12:12, 14
“Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in
prayer…Bless them which persecute you, bless and curse not.”
I Corinthians 4:11-14
“Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and
are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling
place; and labor, working with our own hands: being
reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: being
defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world
and are the off scouring of all things unto this day. I write not
these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.”
II Corinthians 1:3-6
“Blessed by God…who comforteth us in all our tribulation. For as the
sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by
Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is your consolation and
salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings
which we also suffer…”
II Corinthians 4:8-11
“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are
perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken;
cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the
dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made
manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death
for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our
mortal flesh.”
II Corinthians 4:15-17
“For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through
the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we
faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is
renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;”
II Corinthians 6:3-10
“Give no offence in anything, that the ministry be not blamed: but in all
things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in
afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes,
in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in
watchings, in fastings…By honor and dishonor, by evil
report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown,
and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened,
and not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet
making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”
Philippians 1:28-30
“In nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an
evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of
God. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe
on him, but also to suffer for his sake; having the same conflict
which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.”
II Timothy 3:12
“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
persecution.”
Hebrews 10:32-35
“But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were
illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; partly, whilst
ye were made a gazing stock both by reproaches and
afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were
so used. For ye had compassion on me in my bonds, and took joyfully
the spoiling of your goods, knowing yourselves that ye have in heaven
a better and an enduring substance.”
Hebrews 11:36-37
“Others had trial of cruel mockings and scouragings,
yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: they were stoned,
they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the
sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins;
being destitute, afflicted, tormented;”
Hebrews 13:3
“Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them
which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.”
James 5:10
“Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord,
for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.”
I Peter 1:6-7
“Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in
heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of
your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though
it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory
at the appearance of Jesus Christ:”
I Peter 2:21
“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for
us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”
I Peter 3:13:15
“And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which
is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye:
and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer
to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear:”
I Peter 4:12-19
“Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which
is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice,
inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his
glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be
reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of
glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but
on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or
as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters. Yet
if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him
glorify God on this behalf.”
I Peter 5:8-10
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in
the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your
brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called
us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a
while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”
Revelation 2:10
“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil
shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and
ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death,
and I will give thee a crown of life.”
Revelation 6:9-11
“And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of
them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which
they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy
and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell
on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was
said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their
fellow servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as
they were should be fulfilled.”
