JESUS GATHERING WITH HIS DISCIPLES

 

I.  WHAT DID IT MEAN FOR JESUS TO “GATHER” WITH HIS DISCIPLES?

II.  WHEN DID JESUS “GATHER” WITH HIS DISCIPLES?

A.  GOSPEL ACCOUNTS

1. Early Dawn –

a. Matthew 21:18-22 “Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only...”

b. Luke 21:38 “And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.”

c. John 8:1-2 “Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.”

d. John 21:4-25But when the morning had come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord...”

2. Early Morning -

a. Mark 1:35 “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. And he said unto them. Let us go into the next towns that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. And he preached in their synagogues through out all Galilee, and cast out demons.”

b. Mark 11:20And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots...”

3. Morrow -

a. Mark 11:12-14 “And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came...he found nothing but leaves...

4. Noon -

a. John 4:4-42 “And he must needs go through Samaria. The cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar...Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour (noon)...”

5. Evening –

a. Matthew 8:16 “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick...”

b. Matthew 14:15 “And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals...”

c. Matthew 26:18-20 “I will keep the Passover at they house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover. Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve...”

d. Mark 4:35 “And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.”

e. Mark 6:47When even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land...and walking upon the sea...”

f. Mark 14:17-26 “And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me...”

g. John 20:19-23 “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you...

6. Late Evening –

a. Mark 1:32 “And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with demons. And all the city was gathered at the door. And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many demons.”

b. Mark 11:11 “And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.”

c. Mark 11:19 “When even was come, he went out of the city...”

d. Luke 24:29-35 “Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went into tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them...”

7. Night – (First watch 6-9 PM; Second watch 9-12 PM; Third watch 12-3 AM; Fourth watch 3-6 AM)

a. Matthew 14:25-33 “And in the fourth watch of the night (3-6 AM) Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid...Peter walked on the water, to go to Jesus...”

b. Luke 21:37b “...And at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the Mount of Olives...”

8. Day -(Third hour 6-9 AM; Sixth hour 9-12 midday; Ninth hour 12-3 PM; Twelfth hour 3-6 PM)

a. Luke 21:37a “And in the day time he was teaching in the temple...”

9. First Day -

a. Matthew 28:1, 9-10 “In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre...And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.”

b. Mark 16:2-8 “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun...He is risen; he is not here...”

c. Mark 16:2, 9-11 “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepculchre at the rising of the sun...Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.”

d. Luke 24:1 “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them...”

e. Luke 24:13-35 “And, behold, two of them went that same day (first day of the week see 24:1) to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs...And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said unto another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

d. John 20:1-2 “The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.”

e. John 20:11, 16, 18 (first day of the week see 20:1)“Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself and saith unto him, Raboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her."

f. John 20:19-22Then the same day at evening (first day of the week see 20:1), being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”

g. John 20:26-29And after eight days again (the next first day of the week) his disciple were within, and Thomas with them...Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”

10. Sabbath (Seventh Day) -

a. Matthew 12:1 “At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath day...For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

b. Mark 2:23-28 “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath...Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.”

c. Mark 3:1-6 “And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand, and they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day; that they might accuse him. And he saith unto the man, which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil?

d. Mark 6:1-2 “And he went out from thence, and came into his own country (Galilee); and his disciples follow him.  And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue...”

        e. Luke 13:10-17 “And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman, which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

        f. Luke 14:1- 35 “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched him...”

       g. John 5:1-16 “Wilt thou be made whole? Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man (infirmity for 38 years) was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the Sabbath."

       h. John 9:14 “And it was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.” (man blind from birth)
