RAISING THE DEAD AND EVANGELISM
GOSPEL ACCOUNTS:
- Matthew 9:18-19, 23-27
"While he spake these things unto
them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshiped him
saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand
upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him,
and so did his disciples. And when Jesus came into the ruler's
house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, He
said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but
sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people
were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the
maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land."
- Matthew 10:7
"And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom
of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise
the dead, cast out demons; freely ye have received, freely
give."
- Matthew 11:5
"The blind receive their sight, and the
lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead
are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them."
- Mark 5:21-24, 24-35
"And when Jesus was passed over
again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto
him: and he was nigh unto the sea. And, behold, there cometh one
of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw
him, he fell at his feet, and besought him greatly, saying, My
little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come
and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall
live. And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and
thronged him...While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of
the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead:
why toublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard
the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the
synagogue, Be not afraid, only believer. And he suffered no man
to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of
James. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,
and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And
when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado,
and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed
him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the
father and mother of the damsel, and them that were with him,
and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the
damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is,
being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee arise. And
straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age
of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great
astonishment. And he charged them straitly that no man should
know it; and commanded that something should be given her to
eat."
- Luke 7:22
"Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your
way, and tell John what things ye have seen and hear; how that
the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf
hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached."
- Luke 8:41-42, 49-56
(See parallel passage above Mark
5:21-35)
- John 11:1-45
"Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus,
of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that
Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet
with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his
sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest
is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not
unto death, but for the glory of God that the son of God might
be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister,
and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he
abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after
that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judea
again...These things said he: and after that he saith unto them,
Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out
of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall
do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that
he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto
them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that
I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let
us go unto him....And when Jesus came, he found that he had lain
in the grave four days already. Now Bethany was nigh unto
Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: And many of the Jews came
to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went
and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Then said, Martha
unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not
died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of
God, God will give it thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother
shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall
rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto
her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in
me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth
and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thous this? She
said unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ,
the son of God, which should come into the world. And when she
had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister
secretly, saying, the Master is come, and calleth for thee. As
soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was i that place
where Martha met him...Then when Mary was come where Jesus was,
and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord,
if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Jesus
therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came
with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, and he
said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and
see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes
of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have
died? Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the
grave. It was a cave and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take
ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead,
saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been
dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee,
that, if you wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of
God? Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead
was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I
thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest
me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it,
that they may believe that thou has sent me. And when he thus
had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus come forth. And
he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave
clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith
unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews
which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did,
believed on him."
- John 12:10-11
"Much people of the Jews therefore knew
that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but
that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised form the
dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put
Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the
Jews went away, and believed on Jesus."
ACTS ACCOUNTS:
- Acts 9:36-43
"Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple
name Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this
woman was full of good works and alms deeds which she did. And
it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom
when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. And
forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had
heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring
him that he would not delay to come to them. Then Peter arose
and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the
upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and
shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was
with them. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and
prayed: and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And
she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he
gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the
saints and widows, presented her alive. And it was known
throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord."
- Acts 20:9-10, 12
"And there sat in a window a certain
young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as
Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down
from the third loft and was taken up dead. And Paul went down,
and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves;
for his life is in him. When he therefore was come up again, and
had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while even till
break of day, so he departed. And they brought the young man
alive, and were not a little comforted."
NOTE: There were others about whom is recorded in Scripture
that died but were not raised from the dead, and examples of these
were John the Baptist, James and Steven. |
