FIGS AND FIG TREES IN SCRIPTURE


 

  1. Genesis 3:7, 21 “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and the sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons...Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”

  2. Deuteronomy 8:7-10 “For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills: A land of wheat, the barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil, and honey...”

  3. II Kings 20:7 “And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs and they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.”

  4. Isaiah 34:4 “And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.”

  5. Isaiah 38:21 “For Isaiah had said, Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.”

  6. Jeremiah 5:17 “And they shall eat up thing harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.”

  7. Jeremiah 8:13 “And I will surely consume them, saith the Lord: there shall be no fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.”

  8. Jeremiah 24:1-10 “Good figs and evil figs...”

  9. Jeremiah 29:17 “Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.”

  10. I Kings 4:25 “And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.”

  11. Proverbs 27:18 “Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honored.”

  12. Hosea 2:12 “And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lover have given me: and I will make them as a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.”

  13. Hosea 9:10 “I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.”

  14. Joel 1:7 , 12He hath laid my vine wast, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white...The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth;...even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away form the sons of men.”

  15. Joel 2:22 “Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yeild their strength.”

  16. Amos 4:9 “I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmer worm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.”

  17. Micah 4:4 “But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig trees; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.”

  18. Nahum 3:12 “All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the first ripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.”

  19. Habakkuk 3:17 “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the flavor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:”

  20. Haggai 2:19 “Is the seed yet in the barn? Yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.”

  21. Zechariah 3:10 “In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.”

  22. Matthew 7:16-20; Luke 6:43-44 “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth no forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

  23. Matthew 21:18-22 “Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”

  24. Matthew 24:32-33; Mark 11:13-21 “Now learn a parable of the fig tree: When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these thing, know that it is near, even at the doors.”

  25. Luke 13:6-9 “He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and th came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and fin none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shall cut it down.”

  26. John 1:48-50 “Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou was under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God: thou art he King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending the descending upon the Son of man.”

  27. James 3:12 “Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? Either a vine, figs? So can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.”

  28. Revelation 6:13 “And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a might wind.”
