I AM

Old Testament:

Hebrew: “I AM” is hayah = the unsearchableness of God and not just his mere existence, which is havah = to be in existence

1.     Exodus 3:13-15 “And Moses said unto God(elohym = mighty, supreme God)), Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God (elohym) of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name?  What shall I say unto them?  And God (elohym) said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.  And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.”

2.     Exodus 6:2-3 “And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty (El shadday= strong, mighty), but by my name JEHOVAH (yehovah = eternal one, self-existent) was I not known unto them.”

3.     Psalm 68:4 “Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.”

4.     Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

5.     Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

New Testament:

Greek: “I AM” is ego eimi = self-existent, eternal one

1.     I Am the God of thy fathers! “I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”(Acts 7:31-32)

2.     I Am! “Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.  For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.” (Luke 20:37-38)

3.     I AM! “And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him saying,  I Am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?  He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.” (Mark 12:26-27)

4.     I AM! “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?  God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” (Matthew 22:32)

5.     I Am the Messiah! “Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he (Messiah).” (John 4:26)

6.     I AmIt is I!  “So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.  But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.” (John 6:19-20)

7.     I Am from above! “And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.” (John 8:23)

8.     I Am the Light! “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12; John 9:5; John 12:46)

9.     I Am before Abraham was, I Am eternal! “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I Am.” (John 8:58)

10.I Am the Bread of Life! “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

11.I Am the Door! “Then Jesus said unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.  All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.  I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:7-10)

12.I Am the Good Shepherd! “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” (John 10:14)

13.I Am the Son of God! “I and my Father are one.  Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?” (John 10:30, 36)

14.I Am the Resurrection and the Life!  “Jesus said unto her (Martha), I am the resurrection, and the life: He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.  Believest thou this?”(John 11:25-26)

15.I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life!  “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

16.I Am the True Vine! “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.” (John 15:1)

17.I Am the Alpha and Omega! “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was and which is to come, the Almighty.”(Revelation 1:8)

18.I Am the First and the Last! “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead.  And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last.” (Revelation 1:17)

19.Matthew 16:15-16; Mark 8:29; “But whom say ye that I Am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

20.Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there AM I in the midst of them.”

21.Matthew 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit:”

22.Mark 14:61-62 “But he held his peace, and answered nothing.  Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?  And Jesus said I Am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”

23.Colossians 1:15-17 “Who (Son) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

24.Hebrews 13:8Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever.”

25.Revelation 4:8 “And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

I AM...is the assurance and promise of God to be everything that His children need for Him to be and do in our lives, to accomplish what He has commanded, whether it be the children of Israel being led miraculously by God in the Exodus, or for us today fulfilling all that He has called and gifted us to be and do in His Kingdom for His glory!
