TORMENT

 

Greek: basanismos a trial, testing, torment

 

1.     Revelation 9:5 “And to them (locust) it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was a the torment (basaizo) of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.”

2.     Revelation 14:11 “And the smoke of their torment ascended up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”

3.     Revelation 18:7 “How much she (Babylon) hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, to much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit as queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.”

4.     Revelation 18:10 “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city!  For in one hour is thy judgment come.”

5.     Revelation 18:15 “The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her(Babylon), shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing.”

1.     Matthew 18:24-25 “And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.  So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.”

1.     Matthew 4:24 “And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and demons, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.”

2.     Luke 16:23, 28 “And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”

1.     I John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment.  He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

1.     Matthew 8:6, 29 “And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.  And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God?  Art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”

2.     Mark 5:7 “And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God?  I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.”

1.     Hebrews 11:37 “They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins being destitute, afflicted, tormented;”

 

Greek: odunaomai to be pained

 

1.     Luke 16:24 “And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.”

2.     Luke 16:25 “But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.”
