DEATH ACCOUNTS OF OLD & NEW TESTAMENT SAINTS

The Scripture most often records the death of the Old and New Testament saints simply by stating their age at death; however, in other accounts, facts are also included concerning their blessings upon their children, and the cause and circumstances of their death.

ADAM – “And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.” (Genesis 5:5)

ENOCH – “And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not for God took him.” (Genesis 5:23-24)

METHUSELAH – “All the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.” (Genesis 5:27)

NOAH – “All the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.” (Genesis 9:29)

SARAH – “And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.  And Sarah died in Kirjathare; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.” (Genesis 23:1-2)

ABRAHAM – “And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.  Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.” (Genesis 25:7-8)

ISAAC – “And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.  And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.” (Genesis 35:28-29)

JACOB – “And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.   Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.  And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.” (Genesis 49:1-33)

JOSEPH – “And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.  And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.  So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.” (Genesis 50:24-26)

MOSES – “So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.  And He (God) buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.  And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: His eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” (Deuteronomy 34:5-8)

JOSHUA – “And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.  And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathsera, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.” (Joshua 24:29-30; Judges 2:8-9)

GIDEON – “And Gideon, the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulcher of Joash his father, in Ophra of the Abiezrites.” (Judges 8:32)

SAMUEL – “And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah.” (I Samuel 25:1)

SAUL – “Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.  And when Saul’s armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.  So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together.” (I Samuel 31:5-6)

DAVID – “Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; And keep the charge of the Lord thy God to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throng if Israel.  So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.” (I Kings 2:1-3, 10)

SOLOMON – “And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.  And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David his father:” (II Chronicles 9:30-31)

JOB – “After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his son’s sons, even four generations.  So Job died, being old and full of days.” (Job 42:16-17)

ELIJAH –“And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.  And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.  And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.  He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;” (II Kings 2:11-13)

ELISHA – “And Elisha died, and they buried him.  And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.  And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulcher of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.” (II Kings 13:20-21)

DANIEL – “But go thou (Daniel) thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.” (Daniel 12:13)

JOHN THE BAPTIST – “And she (daughter of Herodias), being instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.  And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.  And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.  And his (John’s) disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.” (Matthew 14:2-10; Mark 6:14-25; Luke 9:9)

STEPHEN – “But Stephen, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord.  And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.  And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.  And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.  And when he had said this, he fell asleep.” (Acts 7:55-60)
