HEAD

Note: Greek words such as “head” should be interpreted literally and only interpreted figuratively or metaphorically when it is clearly determined and warranted by the context of the scriptural passage.

The following passages include each time the word “head” is used in the New Testament.

Matthew 5:36 “Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.”

Matthew 6:17 “But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;”

Matthew 8:20 “And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”

Matthew 10:30 “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

Matthew 14:8 “And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.”

Matthew 14:11 “And his head (John the Baptist) was brought in a charger, and give to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.”

Matthew 21:42 “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?”

Matthew 26:7 “Then came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.”

Matthew 27:29 “And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”

Matthew 27:30 “And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.”

Matthew 27:37 “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Matthew 27:39 “And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads.”

Mark 6:24 “And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask?  And she said, The head of John the Baptist.”

Mark 6:25 “And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.”

Mark 6:27 “And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded (apolkephalizo to behead) him in the prison.”

Mark 6:28 “And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.”

Mark 12:10 “And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:”

Mark 14:3 “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.”

Mark 15:19 “And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.”

Mark 15:29 -30“And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself, and come down from the cross.”

Luke 7:38 “And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.”

Luke 7:44 “And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman?  I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.”

Luke 7:46 “My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.”

Luke 9:58 “And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”

Luke 12:7 “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Luke 20:17 “And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?”

Luke 21:18 “But there shall not an hair of your head perish.”

John 13:9 “Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”

John 19:2 “And the soldier platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe.”

John 19:30 “And Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

John 20:7 “And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.”

John 20:12 “And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”

Acts 4:11 “This is the stone which was set at nought of your builders, which is become the head of the corner.”

Acts 18:6 “And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and saith unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.”

Acts 18:18 “And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.”

Acts 21:23-24 “Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them; Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.”

Acts 27:34 “Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.”

Romans 12:20 “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.”

I Corinthians 11:3 “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”

I Corinthians 11:4 “Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.”

I Corinthians 11:5 “But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.”

I Corinthians 11:7 “For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.”

I Corinthians 11:10 “For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.”

I Corinthians 12:21 “And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”

Ephesians 1:22 “And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.”

Ephesians 4:15-16 “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”

Ephesians 5:21-25 (Larger Passage 5:21-33) “Submitting (hupotasso to subordinate, under obedience, be subject to, submit self unto; hupeiko to retire, withdraw, to yield; hupo under, eiko to yield) yourselves one to another in the fear of God.  Wives, submit (huptoasso) yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body.  Therefore as the church is subject (huttoasso) unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.  Husbands, love (agapao Greek verb to love, i.e., as Christ loves; agape  Greek noun for love) your wives, even as Christ also loved (agapao) the church, and gave himself for it;”

Colossians 1:17-18 “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

Colossians 2:10 “And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:”

Colossians 2:19 “And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and hands having nourishment ministered, and knot together, increaseth with the increase of God.”

I Peter 2:7 “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner.”

Revelation 1:14 “His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;”

Revelation 4:4 “And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.”

Revelation 9:7 “And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and the faces were as the faces of men.”

Revelation 9:17 “And thus I saw the horse in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their moths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.”

Revelation 9:19 “For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.”

Revelation 10:1 “And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

Revelation 12:1 “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:”

Revelation 12:3 “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”

Revelation 13:1 “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.”

Revelation 13:3 “And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.”

Revelation 14:14 “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.”

Revelation 17:3 “So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of name of blasphemy, and having seven heads and ten horns.”

Revelation 17:7 “And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel?  I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.”

Revelation 17:9 “And here is the mind which hath wisdom.  The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.”

Revelation 18:19 “And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness!  For in one hour is she made desolate.”

Revelation 19:12 “His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

 

kephalaioo--from root word kephalion , a diminutive of kephale meaning to sum up, to bring under head, to strike on the head, wound in the head

Mark 12:4 “And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.”

protoklisia-- reclining first, place of honor at the dinner table, head of the table, preeminence at meals, chief seats, highest, uppermost

Luke 14:7 (Larger Passage 14:1-15) “And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room (anoteros upper, more conspicuous place, above, higher); lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him…”
