THAT I MAY KNOW HIM

PHILIPPIANS 3:7-21

Philippians 3:1-21 (Larger Passage)

3:1 “Finally (loipon = remain, besides, finally, furthermore, hence forth, moreover), my brethren (adelphos = same womb, brother), rejoice in the Lord (chario = full of cheer, happy, well off, hail, joy, rejoice).  To write (grapho = to write, describe) the same things (autos = backward, same things) to you, to me indeed (men = in fact, indeed) is not grievous (okneros = tardy, indolent, irksome, grievous, slothful), but for you it is safe (asphalos = certain, safe, sure).”

3:2 “Beware (blepo = to look at, behold, beware, perceive, take heed) of dogs (kuon = hound, dog), beware (same as above) of evil workers (kakos = worthless, depraved, bad, evil, wicked; ergates = toiler, teacher, laborer, worker), beware (same as above) of the concision (kataome = to cut, a cutting down, mutilation, concision).”

3:3 “For we are the circumcision (peritome = circumcision, to cut around), which worship (latreuo = minister to, serve, service) God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, very God) in the spirit (pneuma = breath, spirit, life, God, Christ’s Spirit, Holy Spirit), and rejoice (kauchaomai = boast, glory, joy, rejoice) in Christ Jesus (Christos = Anointed, Messiah; Iesous = Jehoshua, Jesus, Lord), and have no confidence (peitho = convince, assent, to rely, agree, assurance, confidence, believer, make friend, obey, trust) in the flesh (sarx = flesh, body, human nature, carnal).”

3:4 “Though I might also have confidence (pepoithesis = reliance, confidence, trust) in the flesh (sarx = same as above).  If any other man thinketh (dokeo = to think, to account) that he hath whereof he might trust (peithos = convince, assent,  to rely, agree, believe, assurance, confidence, trust, content, make friend, obey, be persuaded, yield) in the flesh (sarx = same as above), I more (mallon = in a greater degree, much the more):”

3:5 “Circumcised (peritome = to cut around, circumcised) the eighth day (oktaemeros = an eight day old person, the eighth day), of the stock of Israel (genos = kind, nation, offspring, stock; Israel = Jisrael = adopted name of Jacob and his descendants), of the tribe of Benjamin (phule = off shoot, race, clan, kindred, tribe; Beniamim = an Israelite, Benjamin), an Hebrew of the Hebrews (Hebraios  = Hebraean, Jew; Hebraios  = same); as touching the law (kata = according to, pertaining,  concerning, touching; nomos = principle, law, regulation), a Pharisee (Pharisaios = a Pharisaean, separates,  to separate, );”

3:6 “Concerning zeal, (kata = same as above; zelos = heat, fervent, zeal) persecuting the church (dioko = pursue, press toward, persecute, suffer; ekklesia = ek meaning out of, a calling out, congregation, assembly, community of believers; kaleo meaning = to bid, call, call forth); touching the righteousness (kata same as above; diakiosune meaning holy, just, right, righteous) which is in the law (nomos = law of Moses, principle, regulation), blameless (amemptos = irreproachable, faultless, unblamable, blameless).”

3:7 “But what things were gain (kerdos = gain, lucre) to me, those I counted (hegeomai = deem, consider, think, judge ) loss (detriment, damage, loss) for Christ (Christos = anointed, Messiah, Jesus the Christ).”

3:8 “Yea doubtless (menounge = so then at least, doubtless), and I count (hedgeomai = lead, command, deem, consider, account, judge, think) all things (pas = every, all, the whole) but loss (zemia = detriment, damage, loss) for the excellency (huperecho = excel, superior, higher, supreme) of the knowledge (gnosis = know, knowing, knowledge) of Christ Jesus (Christos = anointed, Messiah; Iesous = Jehosuah)  my Lord (kurios = Master, Lord, God, Supreme Authority, Controller): for whom I have suffered the loss (zemioo = experience detriment, damage, injury, loss) of all things (pas = all, every, all, the whole, whatsoever), and do count (hegeomai = command, deem, consider, account, judge, think) them but dung (scubalan = thrown to the dogs, refuse, ), that I may win Christ (kerdaino = gain, get, win)”

3:9 “And be found in him (heurisko = find, get, obtain, perceive, see), not having mine own righteousness (dikaiosune = right, innocent, just, righteous, meet, justified), which is of the law (nomos = law, regulation, principle, Law of Moses), but that which is through the faith (dia = the channel of an act, by reason of, through)  of Christ (Christos = Christ, Anointed, Messiah), the righteousness (dikaiosune = holy, just, meet, right, righteous, justified) which is of God (ek ex = denoting origin, proceeds from, completion) by faith (pistis = persuasion, conviction, reliance upon Christ,  assurance, believe):”

3:10 “That I may know (ginosko = experientially, fully, absolutely, be sure, understand fully, perceive) Him (Jesus Christ), and the power (dunamis = miraculous power, force, ability, might, work, strength) of His resurrection (anistasis = resurrection from death, standing up again, raised to life again, resurrection, rise from the dead), and the fellowship (koinonia = partnership, participation, communion, fellowship, partaker) of His sufferings (pathema = hardship, pain, affliction, suffering, passion), being made conformable (summorphoo = to render like, conformable to) unto his death (thanatos = to die, be dead, death);”

3:11 “If by any means (eipos = by any means, if somehow, by reason of, completion) I might attain (katantao = arrive at, attain, because of) unto the resurrection (anasuasig = resurrection from death, raised to life) of the dead (nekros = a corpse, dead).”

3:12 “Not as though I had already attained (ede = even now, already at this time; lambano = take, get hold of, receive, obtain, attain), either were already perfect (teleioo = to complete, accomplish, consummate, consecrate, fulfill, finish, make perfect): but I follow after (dioko = pursue, follow, press toward), if that I may apprehend (katalambano = take eagerly, seize, possess, apprehend, attain, comprehend, find, overtake) that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. (katalambano = same as above; Christos = anointed, Messiah; Iesous = Jehoshua, Jesus)”

3:13 “Brethren (aldephos = same womb, a brother), I count not (logizomai = take an inventory, conclude, reason, suppose) myself to have apprehended (katalambano = seize, attain, possess, comprehend, obtain, apprehend): but this one thing I do (heis = one, only), forgetting (epilanthanomai = lose out of mind, neglect) those things which are behind (opiso = back, to the back, behind), and reaching forth (epekteinomai = to stretch, reach forth) unto those things which are before (emprosthen = in front of, before, sight of),”

3:14 “I press toward (doiko = pursue, follow after, press toward) the mark (skopos = a sentry, a scout, peer, mark, goal)  for the prize (brabeion =  prize, award) of the high calling (ano = upward, on top, above, high; klesis = to call, call forth, bid, invitation) of God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, very God) in Christ Jesus (Christos = Anointed, Messiah; Iesous = Jehosua, Jesus).”

3:15 “Let us therefore (oun = certainly, accordingly), as many as (hosos = as many, all that, whosoever) be perfect (teleios = complete, of full age, perfect, mature), be thus minded (phroneo = exercise the mind, opinion, set affection on, think, be like, regard): and if in anything ye be otherwise minded (eitis = if any man, whosoever; phroneo = exercise the mind, opinion, with concern and obedience, set affection on, to think), God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, very God) shall reveal even this unto you (apokalupto = to take off the cover, disclose, reveal).”

3:16 “Nevertheless (plen = moreover, not withstanding, nevertheless), whereto we have already attained (pathano = to be beforehand, precede, to arrive at, already attain), let us walk (stoicheo = walk, march, conform orderly) by the same rule (kanon = rod, standard, boundary,  line, rule), let us mind (phroneo = exercise the mind, sentiment or opinion, thin, set affection on, obedience) the same thing (autos=same as above).”

3:17 “Brethren (adelphos = same womb, brother), be followers together (summimetes = co-imitator, follower together) of me (mou = of me), and mark them (skopeo = regard, take heed, mark) which walk (peripateo = to tread all around, walk at large, be occupied with), so as ye have us as an ensample (tupos = pattern, model, style, resemblance, a sample, a type, print).”

3:18 “(For many walk (peripateo = tread all around, walk at large as proof of ability, live, deport oneself), of whom I have told you often (pollikos = many times, frequently), and now tell you even weeping (klaio = to sob, wail aloud), that they are the enemies (echthros = adversary, actively hostile, foe) of the cross of Christ (stauros = instrument of capital punishment, exposure to death, self-denial, implied atonement of Christ, cross; Christos  = Anointed,       Messiah ).”

3:19 “Whose end (telos = goal, conclusion, result, purpose) is destruction (apoleia = ruin, loss, waste, death), whose God (theos = deity, supreme Divinity, very God) is their belly (koilia = cavity, abdomen, belly), and whose glory (doxa = dignity, honor, praise, worship, glory) is in their shame (aischune = disgrace, dishonesty, shame ), who mind (phroneo = exercise the mind, entertain, opinion, interest oneself in, obey, affection, think) earthly things (epigeios = worldly, earthly).

3:20 “For our conversation (politeuma = behavior, life, citizenship, community) is in heaven (ouranos = heaven, eternity); from whence also we look for (apekdechomadi = expect fully, look for, wait for) the Savior (soter = deliverer, savior), the Lord Jesus Christ (kurios = supreme authority, controller, God, Lord, Master; Iesous = Jehosua, Jesus; Christos = Anointed, Messiah):”

3:21 “Who shall change (metaschematizo = transfigure, transform, change) our vile body (tapeinosos = vile, humiliation, low, cast down, low degree; soma = body), that it may be fashioned like unto (ginomai = come into being, cause to be, assembled) his glorious body (doxa  = dignity, honor, praise, glory, glorious), according to the working (eneregia = energy, strong, active, effectual, powerful, ) whereby he is able (dunamai = able, might, power) even to subdue (hupotasso = subordinate, put under, obey, subjection, under obedience, in subjection,  submit self unto) all things (pas = every, the whole, whatsoever, whosoever) unto himself (heautou = himself alone).”
