WATCH AND PRAY

WATCH

agrupneo  watch, to be sleepless, keep awake.

Mark 13:32-33 “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.  Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.”

Luke 21:34-36 “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be over charged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.  For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.  Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”

Ephesians 6:18 “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

gregoreuo  to watch, watch, watchful, be awake, rouse, be vigilant, keep awake, keep awake, lift up, rise up, stand up, stand.

Matthew 24:42-44Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.  But know this, that if the good-man of the house had known in what watch (phulake  a guarding, guard, watch) the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.  Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

Matthew 26:38-41 “Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?  Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Mark 13:34-37 “For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watchWatch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.  And what I say unto all, Watch.”

Mark 14:34-38 “And he saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.  And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou?  Couldest not thou watch one hour?  Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.  The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.”

Luke 12:35, 37-40 “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.  And if he shall come in the second watch (phulake  guard, a guarding), or come in the third watch (phulake same as above), and find them so, blessed are those servants.  This know, that if the good-man of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.  Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”

Acts 20:27-32 “For I have not shunned to declare unto you (v 17 elders-older, mature/presbuteros) all the counsel of God.  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Spirit hath made you overseers (bishops watchmen/episcopos), to feed (pastor-shepherd/poimaino) the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.  Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.  And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”

I Corinthians 16:13-14Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.  Let all your things be done with love.”

Colossians 4:2-6 “Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.  Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.  Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

I Thessalonians 5:1-8 “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.  For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.  For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.  But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.  Ye are all the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.  Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.  For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.  But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.”

Revelation 3:2-3 “(Church of Sardis) Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.  Remember there how thou has received and heard, and hold fast, and repent.  If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.”

Revelation 16:15 “Behold, I come as a thief.   Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

II Timothy 4:1-5 “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.  But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, making full proof of thy ministry.”

I Peter 4:7 “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.  And above all things have fervent love among yourselves: for love shall cover the multitude of sins.”
