Anna (grace)

Elect Lady (Cyria) & Her Children

I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.  And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.  And this is love, that we walk after his commandments.  This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.  This is a deceiver and an antichrist.  Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.  He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:  For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.  Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. Elisabeth (God is abundance)

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.  And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth (Same as above) shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.  And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.  For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this?  For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.  And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he tarried so long in the temple.  And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and thy perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.  And after those days his wife Elisabeth (Same as above) conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth (Same as above).

“Now Elisabeth’s (Same as above) full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.  And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.  And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child: and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.  And his mother (meter mother) answered and said, not so; but he shall be called John.  And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.  And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.  And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John.  And they marveled all.

And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.  And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.  And all that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be!  And the hand of the Lord was with him.  And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying… (1:68-80)”

 

Eunice (victorious)

Romans 16:7 “Salute Andronicus and Junia (Iounias Latin origin, Junias), my kinsmen (suggenes a relative by blood, kin, kinfolk, kinsman), and my fellow prisoners (sunaichmalotos co-captive, fellowprisoner; aichmalotos a prisoner of war, a captive), who are of note (episemos remarkable, that is eminent, notable, of note; semaino a mark, to indicate, signify, stamp; *among (en position a relation of rest, between) the apostles (Same as above), who also were in Christ before me.”

*Note: Eight Greek Scholars’ Interpretation–

A.T. RobertsonAmong the apostles en tois apostolois naturally means that they are counted among the apostles in the general sense true of Barnabas, Silas, etc.  But it can mean simply that they were famous in the circle of the apostles in the technical sense.”

NicollAmong has the same ambiguity in Greek as in English.  It might mean, well-known to the apostolic circle, or distinguished as Apostles.  The latter sense is that in which it is taken by “all patristic commentators”, i.e., Sanday and Headlam, whose instinct for what words meant in a case of this kind must have been surer than that of a modern reader.  It implies, of course, a wide sense of the word Apostle: for justification of which reference may be made Scholars like Weiss and Gifford hold that what is meant here is that Andronicus and Junias were honorably known to the twelve.”

M.R. VincentJunia may be either masculine or feminine.  If the latter (feminine), the person was probably the wife of Andronicus.  If the former (masculine), the name is to be rendered Junias.  The following words (of the continuing text) point to this conclusion.”

Robert Utley “Junia/Junias This name could be masculine or feminine, which must be determined by accent marks.  There are Greek manuscript variations* where some have the feminine (Ioulian) and others masculine (Iounian).  This feminine form does occur in 16:15.  It is possible that the two persons named in v7 were 1) Two Jewish believers who were imprisoned with Paul 2) A brother and sister 3) A husband and wife.  If it is feminine and if the phrase “the apostle” referred to a wider use of that term than “the Twelve,” then this was a female apostle.  It is also interesting that the spelling “Junias” has not been found anywhere in Roman literature or inscriptions but the name “Junia” was very common.  It was a Roman family name. “Who were of note among the apostles” can refer to the “Twelve”, if so these two were well known to them.  If this refers to a wider group of ministers known as “apostles” (Acts 14:4, 14; 18:5; I Cor.4:9; Gal. 1:19; Phil. 2:25; I Thess. 2:6).  The context implies this wider usage, as in Eph.4:11, but the definite article implies the Twelve.”

*“Junias” This name could be masculine or feminine, which must be determined by accent marks.  There are Greek manuscript variations, “Iounian,” is found in MSS, A, B, C, D, F, G & P, but with no accent mark.  The accented feminine form is found in MSS B2, D2, and 0150.  The early papyrus manuscript P46 and some Vulgate and Coptic translations, as well as the Greek texts used by Jerome, have “Ioulian” which is feminine.  Some scholars think that this was a scribal error.”

John 2:1-11 “And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.  And when they wanted wine, the mother (Mary) of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.  Jesus saith unto her, Woman (Mary), what have I to do with thee?  Mine hour is not yet come.  His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.  Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.  And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.  And they bare it.

When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set for good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now.  This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believe on him.”

John 19:25-27 “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother (Mary), and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus therefore saw his mother (Mary), and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother (Mary), Woman Mary, behold thy son!  Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother (Mary)!  And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”

Acts 1:12-15 “Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount of Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day’s journey.  And when they were come in they went up into an upper room where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary (Same as above) the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.  And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty…)”

Acts 2:1-4 “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Priscilla* (a little Prisca)

Acts 18:1-4 “After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth: And found (heurisko to find) a certain (tis some, a person, certain one) Jew (Ioudaios belonging to Jehudah, Judah, Jew) named (onama a name, called by, named) Aquila (Akulas Latin Aquila: an eagle, an Israelite, Note he is listed first), born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife (gune a woman, specifically a wife) Priscilla (Pricilla, a little Prisca); because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome and came unto them. 

And because he was of the same craft (homotechnos a fellow artificer, of the same craft), he abode (meno to stay, in a given place, abide, dwell, remain) with them, and wrought (ergazomai to toil, as a task, occupation, be engaged in, labor for, work, minister about): for by their occupation (techne art, trade, skill, craft, occupation) they were tentmakers (skenopoios a manufacturer of tents, tentmaker). 

And he (Paul) reasoned (dialegomai to say thoroughly, discuss, in argument or exhortation, dispute, preach unto, reason with, speak) in the synagogue (sunagoge an assemblage of persons, specifically as Jewish meeting or place, assembly, congregation) every (pas all, every, the whole, every one) Sabbath (sabbaton the Sabbath, day of weekly repose from secular avocations, observance), and persuaded (peitho to convince by argument, persuade) the Jews (Same as above) and the Greeks (Hellen, a Hellen, Grecian, inhabitant of Hellas, a non-Jew, Gentile, Greek).”

Acts 18:18 “And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla (listed first) and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.”

Acts 18:24-27 “And a certain Jew named Apollos (Apollos, from pagan deity Apollon, that is the sun, Apollonia a place in Macedonia), born at Alexandria, an eloquent (logios fluent, an orator, eloquent) man (aner a man, an individual male, fellow, husband) and mighty in the scriptures (dunatos powerful, capable, able, mighty, strong; graphe a document, that is holy Writ, scripture), came to Ephesus.

This man was instructed (katecheo to sound down into the ears, that is to indoctrinate, inform, instruct, teach) in the way (hodos a road, highway, progress, the route, act, distance, way) of the Lord (kurios supremacy, supreme in authority, that is controller, God, Lord, Master); and being fervent (eo to be hot, fervent, earnest, great enthusiasm, passionate, zeal for God ) in (zeo in) the spirit (pneuma breath, spirit), he spake of the Lord (laleo to talk, utter words, preach, say, speak, talk, tell utter; didasko to teach, to learn), knowing only (epistamai to put the mind upon, that is comprehend, be acquainted with, know, understand; monon merely, alone, only) the baptism (baptisma immersion; baptize to make whelmed, that is fully wet, baptism, wash; bapto to cover wholly with a fluid, to dip, stain as with dye) of John (Ioannes, Joannes, Jochanan, John ). 

And he began to speak boldly (parhresiazomai to be frank in utterance, confident in spirit and demeanor, be bold, preach, speak boldly) in the synagogue: whom when Aquila (listed first) and Priscilla had heard (akouo to hear, give audience, come to the ears, reported, understand), they (Aquila & Priscilla) took him unto them (Aquila & Priscilla; proslambano to take to oneself, lead aside, admit to friendship or hospitality, receive, take unto; lambano to take, to get hold of), and expounded unto him (ektithemi ek out; tithemi to place, to advise, set forth; archomai to commence in order of time, rehearse from the beginning; tithemi to advise, set forth) the way of God (hodos  road, progress, means, journey, highway; theos deity, Divinity, by Hebraism very God) more perfectly (akribesteron more exactly, more perfectly; akribestatos most exact, straightest; akribos exactly, diligently, perfectly).

For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.”

Romans 16:3-5 “Greet Priscilla (listed first) and Aquila my helpers (sunergos co-laborer, companion in labor, helper, worker, laborer together with, workfellow; sun union, with or together, companionship; sunergeo to help in work, to co-operate, be a co-worker; ergon to work, toil as an effort or occupation, deed, doing, labor, work ) in Christ Jesus:

Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all (pas all, every, the whole, as many as) the churches (ekklesia a calling out, meeting, congregation, assembly, church) of the Gentiles (ethnos a race, tribe, a foreign, non-Jewish, pagan, Gentile, nation, people).  Likewise greet the church that is in their house.”

II Timothy 4:19 “Salute Prisca (listed first) and Aquila, and the household (oikos same as above) of Onesiphorus (Onesiphorus profit bearer).”

*Note: Pricilla (Prisca) It is of keen interest and significance that Luke who wrote the Book of Acts by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit would list a female/wife first with a male last as he did in the above passages.  He does so three times; however, he also balances it by listing the male/husband first an equal three times.

Woman Taken in Adultery

John 8:1-11 “Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.  And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.  And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman (gune a woman, wife) taken in adultery (katalambano to take eagerly, seize, possess, apprehend; moicheia adultery); and when they had set her in the midst, they said unto him, Master (didaskalos  instructor, doctor, master, teacher) this woman (Same as above) was taken in adultery (katalambano to take eagerly, seize, apprehend, come upon, take; moicheuo to commit adultery), in the very act (epautophoro in actual crime, in the very act)…He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone…When Jesus lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman (Same as above), he said unto her, Woman (Same as above), where are those thine accusers (kategoros against, complainant at law, accuser)?  Hath no man condemned (oudeis not even one, nobody; katakrino to judge against, sentence, condemn, damn) thee?  She said, No man, Lord (kurios Same as above).  And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I (oude neither, not even, no even so much as, nothing)  condemn thee (katakrino to judge against, sentence, condemn, damn): go (poreuomai to traverse, travel, depart, go away, forth, journey, walk), and sin (hamartano to miss the mark, so not share in prize, to err, morally to sin, faults, offence, trespass) no more (meketi no further, any longer, henceforth, hereafter, no more, not any more).”

Woman With Alabaster Box

Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; Luke 7:37-38, 44-50 “Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came unto him a woman (gune a woman, wife) having an alabaster box (alabastron a perfume vase, alabaster box) of very precious ointment (brutimos highly valuable, very precious; muron myrrh, perfumed oil, ointment), and poured it on his head (katacheo to pour, pour down or out; kephale the head), as he sat at meat…When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble (kopos cut, toil, trouble, weariness) ye this woman (Same as above)?  For she hath wrought (ergazomai to toil, minister about) a good work upon me (kalos beautiful, good, worthy) …For in that she hath poured (ballo pour) this ointment (muron myrrh, perfumed oil, ointment) on my body (soma body), she did it for my burial (entaphiazo interment, bury).  Verily I say unto you, Where so ever this gospel (euaggelion a good message, news, the gospel) shall be preached  (kerusso to herald, preach, proclaim publish, as a public crier) in the whole world (holos whole, all, complete, throughout; kosmos world), there shall also this, that this woman (Same as above) hath done (poieo to make, or do, work), be told (laleo to talk, utter words, preach, tell) for a memorial of her (mnemosunon record, memorial, reminder).”

Luke 23:55-56 “And the women (Same as above) also, which came with him (sunerchomai accompany, come with) from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid.  And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

Luke 24:21-24 (Two on the road to Emmaus) “But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.  Yea, and certain women (tis some, person, certain; gune Same as above) also of our company (hemon from us,, our company) made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher; and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women (gune Same as above) had said: but him they saw not.  Then he (Jesus) said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?  And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

Acts 1:14 “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women (sun union, with, together, companionship, completeness; gune Same as above), and Mary the mother Jesus, and with his brethren.”

Acts 17:4 “And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great a great multitude, and of the chief women (protos foremost in importance, best) not a few (ou not; oligos a few in number).”

NOTE: The list of women above includes at least 37 persons identified by name and/or description.  This does not include the additional number of unknown/unnamed women as indicated by the references made in various passages in Scripture such as, “the women”- 4 times, “many other women”-1 time, “certain women”-2 times, “chief women not a few”- 1, “women not a few”-1 time, “many women”- 1 time, “women”- 1 time, “certain others”-1 , “other women”-1, “many others”-1.  These “other” references cannot be numbered, so the total number of women referenced in the New Testament who served the Lord in various ministries could be accurately number 37 pluse the innumerable references.  This strongly indicates the importance and significance of women in the New Testament actively involved in ministry.
