EDIFY & EXHORT ONE ANOTHER

 

Greek: exhort = paraklesis meaning a calling near or to one’s side to

  comfort, encourage and admonish with appeal to action.

   edify = oikomomeo meaning to build a house, construct, living

  stones, encourage spiritual progress by instruction and

  example.

1.   Hebrews 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the

 manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so

 much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

2.   Hebrews 3:13 “But exhort on another daily.”

3.   I Corinthians 14:26 “When ye come together…Let all things be done unto

      edifying.”

4.    Romans 14:19 “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for

                              peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.”

 

We are not talking about:

 

1)   flattery (kolakeia= adulation, entice, smoothness) which is clearly

spoken against in Scripture.  Like men pleasers (anthropareskos =

pleasing others,  giving eye service.

2)   criticize which means to speak unfavorably, stressing the faults.

3)   judgmental (gnome = which means to speak ones mind, give opinion, pick apart.

4)   Say what you think or what’s on your mind! (Ephesians 4:15 “Speak the truth in love.”

 

Example: “Woman at Crawford church who gave me a piece of her mind.”

 

We are talking about:

 

1)   Being like Barnabas which means in the Greek a consoler, comforter,

     encourager.

a)   Barnabas encouraged others by selling his houses and lands and

     giving to the needs of the church family! (Acts 4:36-37)

b)   Barnabas encouraged others by defending Saul before the

     apostles! (Acts 9:26-27)

c)   Barnabas encouraged others by being sent by the apostles to edify(build up) the church at Antioch! (Acts 11:22-24)

d)   Barnabas encouraged others by looking for Saul and bringing him to Antioch! (Acts 11:25)

e)   Barnabas encouraged others by defending John Mark! (Acts 15:36-39)

edification!  Tell them what they have meant to you personally!
