BLOOD, FIRE AND SMOKE
Acts 2:19-21 "And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and
signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor or smoke: The
sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before
that great and notable day of the Lord: And it shall come to pass,
that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
- "I will shew" - Greek didomi meaning to give; See:
Matthew 24:24 of false Christs and false prophets, "Shewing
great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible,
they shall deceive the very elect." and Mark 6:14 of John
the Baptist, "And therefore mighty works do shew forth
themselves in him(John the Baptist).
- "wonders" - Greek teras meaning unusual and
remarkable appearances, great and striking changes in the sky,
sun and moon, to watch like a wonder in the sky; See:
Matthew 24:24 and Mark 13:22 "For false Christs and
false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders;
insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very
elect."
- "in heaven above" - Greek ouranos meaning sky, air,
atmosphere surrounding the earth; See: Matthew 6:26
"birds of the air"; great and striking changes in the
sky, the sun and moon; unusual and remarkable appearances.
- "signs in the earth beneath" - Greek semeion meaning
a sign, mark, signal; See: Matthew 12: 39,
16:4 and Mark 8:38 Jesus: "An evil and adulterous
generation seeketh after a sign;" Matthew 24:24 of
false Christs and false prophets, "Shewing great signs
and wonders;", Mark 13:22 "For false Christs and
false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and
wonders," and John 4:48 "Then said Jesus unto him(certain
nobleman), Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not
believe."
- "blood" - Greek haima meaning blood, commonly used as
bloodshed, an emblem of slaughter or of battle, as shed in war,
seditions and murders; See: Revelation 8:7-8 "fire
mingled with blood were cast upon the earth: and the
third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt
up...and a third part of the sea became blood;";
Revelation 11:6-8 "power over the waters to turn them to
blood..."; Revelation 14:20 "and the wine press was
trodden without the city, and blood came out of the wine
press, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand
and six hundred furlongs."; Revelation 16:4 "rivers and
fountains of waters became blood."
- "fire" - Greek pur meaning fire as in conflagration,
destruction, an image of war or the conflagration of towns and
dwellings in time of war; See: II Peter 3:7
"But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word
are kept in store reserved unto fire against the day of
judgment and perdition of ungodly men."
- "vapor of smoke" - Greek atmos meaning an exhalation
from the earth as ascending or rising columns or pillars of
smoke as from burning and pillaging of war. See:
Revelation 9:2 "and there arose a smoke out of the
pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the
air were darkened by reason of the smoke...";
Revelation 9:18 "A third part of men killed, by the fire and
by the smoke..."
- "sun shall be turned into darkness" - Greek
helios meaning sun or solar light; Greek metas
meaning to turn afterward or over; Greek skotos
meaning darkness, eclipsed, image of calamity and war; See:
Matthew 24:29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those
days shall the sun be darkened, and moon shall not give
her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers
of the heavens shall be shaken:"
- "moon into blood" - Greek selene
meaning the moon. See: Matthew 24:29,
Mark 13:24 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days
shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give
her light..."; Luke 21:25-26 "And there shall be signs in
the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the
earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the
sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for
fear, and for looking after those things which are
coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be
shaken."
- "before that great and notable day
of the Lord" - Before is Greek prin meaning
before that; great is Greek megas meaning great;
notable is Greek epiphanes is notable and is of
the same root as the Epiphany or appearing, in reference to the
Second Coming of Christ. It means notable, very manifest. This
is a quoted from Joel where he uses the word terrible, fearful,
a word applicable to days of calamity, trial and judgment.
Day is Greek hemera meaning day. Of the
Lord is Greek kurios meaning Lord, Master.

Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit
of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his
coming:"; I Timothy 6:14 "That thou keep this
commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing
of our Lord Jesus Christ."; II Timothy 4:1 "I charge
thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall
judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his
kingdom:"; Titus 2:13 "Looking for that blessed hope, and
the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus
Christ:"; I Thessalonians 5:2 "For yourselves know
perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief
in the night."; I Corinthians 1:7-8 "So that ye come
behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye
may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.";
Philippians 1:10 "That ye may approve things that are
excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till
the day of Christ;"
- "it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
- Greek epikaleo meaning to call upon, to call
upon by adoration; Greek onama meaning name, in
acknowledgment or confession of; Greek kurios meaning
Lord, Master; Greek sozo meaning to make or keep
sound or safe, of spiritual and eternal salvation granted
immediately by God to those who call upon the Lord; See:
Romans 10:12-13 "For there is no difference between the
Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all
that call upon him. For whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Note: In the last days while simultaneously all these
calamitous events are transpiring as described in the above
passage of Acts 2:19-21, Jesus says in Matthew
24:14 that "This gospel of the kingdom shall
be preached in all the world for a witness unto all
nations; and then shall the end come." And in
Luke 21:28, Jesus says, "And when these things begin
to come to pass, then look up, and lift up
your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."
