LOVE ONE ANOTHER

John 13:35

INTRODUCTION

One of the most repeated commandments in Scripture is for believers to love one another.  In fact, Jesus said in our text that “the way that all men would know that we are His disciples would be if we love one another!”

  1. I once heard someone say: “I love mankind…It’s people I can’t stand!”

  2. Example: Older Couple Who Went For Counseling: ”I told her once I loved her and      when I change my mind I’ll let her know!”

There are three different kinds of love described in the Scripture:

  1. eros from which we get our word erotic or sexual love

  2.  phileo from which we get our word Philadelphia, the city of love meaning friendship and  of love.

  3. agape which can only be defined as a God-kind of love or to love as God loves.

MAIN BODY

1.     *John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another: as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”

3.   John 15:12 “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”

4.     John 15:17 “These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

5.     Romans 5:5 “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us.”

6.     I John 3:11 “For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”

7.     *I John 3:14 “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.  He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”

8.     *I John 3:18-19 “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.  And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.”

9.  I John 4:11-12 “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. If we love      one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

10. *I John 4:20-21 “If any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he had seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?  And this commandment have we from Him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”

11. *II John 5 “The commandment which we had from the beginning is that we love one       another.

CONCLUSION

The early church fathers tell us that according to tradition it is believed that when John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was too old to walk on his own, his disciples would carry him into the assembly of believers to greet the saints.  Whenever asked what he wanted to say to the congregation, he always spoke the same words, “Little children, LOVE ONE ANOTHER!”
