Wait on the Lord

(Lessons from the life of David)

Psalm 27:14Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”

David is one of the best examples of a person who waited upon the Lord. He came to know through his life experiences the difficulty of what it meant to wait upon the Lord. Just as it was not an easy lesson for David to learn, so in our lives it is a continual challenge as well.

The Samuel told David that God had chosen him to be King of Israel; however, David spent many years waiting for this prophetic word from the Lord to come to pass.

Many adverse events occurred in David's life as he waited upon God:

  1. Saul, a paranoid king, occupied the throne that was promised to David!*

  2. David had to hide and live in caves in the midst of his enemies!

  3. While David waited, he saw good friends murdered and his family and possessions stolen!

  4. David witnessed Israel's enemies wreak havoc on his beloved nation!

Note: I Samuel 26:9-11 “For who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed(Saul), and be guiltless? David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish. The Lord forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord's anointed(Saul):”

Many blessings and rewards came to David for waiting upon the Lord:

  1. David became a man after God's own heart!

  2. David became the greatest king in Israel's history!

  3. Through David's descendants came the Messiah!

  4. The lessons David wrote in the Psalms concerning “waiting on the Lord”, have been an encouragement through the ages!

Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
