NUMBERS OF SIGNIFICANCE IN THE BIBLE*
Having studied the Bible for many years, I have come more and more
aware of the importance and significance of numbers recorded in
Scripture. From the very beginning of the recorded word in the Old
Testament, we read where God very deliberately uses numbers in the
“7” day account of creation. He uses numbers in recording the “40”
days of the flood.
It was important to God that He recorded the number “7” for the
times that Gideon should march around Jericho before the walls fell
or that Naaman should wash “7” times in the Jordan for his healing.
It is recorded in the New Testament that Jesus fasted and prayed for
“40” days before being confronted with the “3” temptations of
Satan. Jesus had the multitudes be seated in numbers of “50” and
“100” before they were fed. The Scripture even records the “3”, “4”
and “5” thousand men (not including women and children) who were fed
from “5” to “7” loaves and “2” fishes and it also records the number
“7” to “12” for the baskets of fish and “5” loaves of bread left
over.
Peter denied the Lord “3” times and the Lord rose on the “3rd”
day. They even counted the “153” fish the disciples caught after
the resurrection as they dined together with Jesus on the shores of
the Lake of Galilee. After Jesus death and resurrection, he appeared
to the disciples for “40” days before his ascension. Then “10” days
later when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, the Holy Spirit
descended upon the “120” believers in the upper room.
So as one can readily see, an essential key to understanding the
Bible is through the numbers found within its pages. The
connections and patterns of Biblical numbers, when searched out and
understood, reveal the handiwork of God. Although the arrangement
of some numbers is obvious, others are hidden and require in-depth
study.
From creation to about 90 AD, some 40 writers were involved in
compiling the Scriptures. A single author would have to be an
absolute genius to develop the numerical design found in the Bible.
But 40 separate authors, writing over a period of nearly 3800 years,
consistently following a complex numerical pattern – the odds would
be beyond calculation. It would simply be impossible – apart from
the direct inspiration of God.
Now, we will first define and explain the spiritual significance of
the numbers, then the occurrences of words, the values formed by the
letters of the words themselves (which is called Gematria) and then
illustrate its meaning and teaching as applied to its use. The
Hebrews and Greeks used their alphabets as shown below.*(See the end
of this study)
Thus numbers in the Bible are not used by chance but by design.
Each one has a particular Biblical meaning and symbolism attached to
it by our Creator. Now let us examine the various numbers of most
significance as recorded in the Old and New Covenant Scriptures.

Acts 7:26
“And the next day he shewest himself unto them as they

Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?”
There can be no doubt as to the importance of this primary number.
In all languages the number “One” is the symbol of unity. As
a cardinal number it denotes unity; as an ordinal it denotes
primacy. Unity being indivisible, and not made up of other numbers,
is therefore independent of all others, and is the source of all
others.
There is a special importance in how many times the number “One”,
or ‘First’, appears in God’s word. The ancient Jewish commentators
call special attention to them, and lay great stress upon them.
They generally help us in fixing the meaning of a word or point us
to some lesson in connection with it.
The number “One” signifies the unity and oneness of God:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!”
(Deuteronomy 6:4)
Number “One”
also symbolizes the unity and oneness of God the Father and Jesus
Christ. “I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30) “That they
all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee,
that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe
that thou hast sent me.” (John 17:21)
By His “One” sacrifice, Jesus removes our sins forever.
Jesus is the “One” Mediator and the “One” Shepherd. “For
there is one God, and one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus;” (I Timothy 2:5) “And other sheep I
have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they
shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one
shepherd.”(John10:16)
Finally, Paul the apostle states regarding the relationship between
God and believers: “There is one body, and one
Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God
and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you
all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6)

rachamah two damsels
Judges 5:30 “Have they not sped? Have they not
divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to
Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of
needlework, of divers colors of needlework on both sides,
meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?”

them.”

foot forty and two months. And I will give power
unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a
thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in
sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the
two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them,
and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because
these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the
earth.”
Revelation 12:14 “And to the woman were given two

Revelation 13:5, 11 “And there was given unto him a
mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was
given unto him to continue forty and two months. And
I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he
had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.”
dis twice, again, two
Mark 14:30 “And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say
unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the
cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.”
As we have previously seen that “One” excludes all difference, and
denotes that which is sovereign. Whereas “Two” affirms that
there is a difference, there is another, while ‘One” affirms that
there is not another.
“Two” is the first number by which we can divide another, and
therefore in all its uses we may trace this fundamental idea of
division or difference. The number “Two” signifies union,
division and verification by witnesses: The union of husband and
wife as one; the union of Christ and the Church; the unity between
the Old and New Testaments.
God requires a minimum of two witnesses in any trial or
dispute. Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs to witness
and preach the gospel. The final witnesses of God during the
tribulation will be Two Witnesses.

The Number 3 is used 467 times in the Bible.
It pictures completeness, though to a lesser degree than 7.
The significance of 3 comes from the fact that it is the
first of four perfect numbers: 3 denotes divine perfection;
7 denotes spiritual perfection; 10 denotes ordinal
perfection; 12 denotes governmental perfection.
The number 3 points us to what is real, essential, perfect,
substantial, complete, and Divine.

beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.
After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which

beast had also four heads, and dominion was given to
it. These great beasts, which are four, are four

before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto
crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the
throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and
behind. The four and twenty elders fall down before
him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth

power: for thou hast created all things, and fore thy
pleasure they are and were created.”

loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given
to hurt the earth and the sea. And I heard the number of
them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and

of whom is as the sand of the sea.”
Revelation 21:17 “And he measured the wall thereof,
an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to
the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.”
Number 4
is made up of 3 and 1, and it denotes His creative works. It is the
number of creation. It is the number of things that have a
beginning, of creation; of man in his relation to the world as
created; it is the number of things that have a beginning, of things
that are made, of material things, and matter itself. Four is the
number of material completeness. Four is the number of the
world. It represents man’s weakness, helplessness and vanity.
Four
is the number of the great elements: earth, air, fire and water.
Four are the regions of the earth: north, south, east, and
west. Four are the divisions of the day: morning, noon,
evening, and midnight. Four are the seasons of the year:
spring, summer, autumn and winter. Four is the number of the
Gospel Accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

he that had received the five talents went and traded

fruit every month (twelve): and the leaves of the tree were
for the healing of the nations.”
The number twelve is found 187 times in the Bible, 22 of which are
in Revelation. Twelve is the perfect number, signifying
perfection of government. It is found as a multiple in all that has
to do with rule.
The twelve sons of Israel, though actually thirteen in
number, are never listed with thirteen names in a single list.
There are about eighteen enumerations all together, but in each list
one or the other son/tribes is omitted. Generally it is Levi, but
not always. In Revelation 7 both Dan and Ephraim are omitted, but
the enumeration is still twelve, Levi and Joseph being
introduced for this special sealing of the remnant which shall go
unscathed through the great tribulation.
When we come to the New Testament we find the same great principle
pervading the apostolic government. There were twelve stones
in the High Priest’s breastplate; twelve stones taken out of
the Jordan; twelve spies, etc.
Jesus appeared in public for the first time at the age of twelve
at which time he utters his first recorded words. Twelve
legions of angels mark the perfection of angelic powers. During the
great tribulation 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of
Israel are saved, totaling 144,000. The bride of Christ is
pictured with a crown of 12 stars.
The New Jerusalem has 12 gates of pearls, 12 angels at
the gates and the names of 12 tribes of Israel over the
gates. The wall of the city has 12 foundations of precious
stones and in them are the names of the 12 apostles. The
wall is 144 cubits high (12x12) and the city is 12,000
furlongs (1,500 miles) square.

forty and nine years. Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of
the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh

Acts 2:1-4 “And when the day of Pentecost was
fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And
suddenly there came a mighty wind, and it filled all the
house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them
cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of

The number fifty is the number of jubilee or deliverance and
points to deliverance and rest following on as the result of the
perfect consummation of time.
Leviticus 25
describes the 50th or Jubilee year. The
word Jubilee means “liberty”. The Jubilee year is
proclaimed with the sound of a trumpet on the Day of Atonement, so
that all know the holy year has begun.
God owns the land, and in the Jubilee, He wants the return of
every man to his possession and inheritance. Men, who have worked
as a servant to pay off their debt, must be freed and allowed to
return to their own land and to their families according to
Leviticus 25:8-10, 13-14, 39-41.
The number fifty is used 154 times in scripture. In the New
Testament, Fifty is connected with the coming of the Holy
Spirit. On the Wave Sheaf Offering Day recorded in Leviticus
23:9-11, Jesus ascended to heaven to be accepted by the Father
as the first fruits. Beginning with that day, there is a 50-day
count to Pentecost, the Feast of First Fruits, when the Holy
Spirit was first poured out upon the Church, the first fruits of the
spiritual harvest. God the Father did not send the Holy Spirit
until Christ ascended into heaven as our High Priest and whose blood
made atonement for our sins.

together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and
brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled,
which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David spake before

The number 120 occurs six times in Scripture. One hundred
and twenty is made up of three forties (3x40=120) and signifies
a divinely appointed period of probation. When the number 120

people.
The Great Synagogue or Great Assembly was a group of 120
Jewish elders initially established by the prophet Ezra. It was
Ezra, an Aaronic priest who lived more than eight hundred years
after Moses, who led the effort to officially collect and edit the
writings that would become what we call the Old Testament. It was
during the canonization process that the number of books in the Old
Testament and their book arrangement was set.
In the Book of Revelation, the number 120 is a factor of the
144,000 (120 x 1,200) who will be sealed from the twelve tribes of
Israel who will be protected in the Great Tribulation as described
in Revelation 7.

13:1-18) “And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and
poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right
hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or
sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast,

The number 666 occurs only one time in Scripture and that is
found in Revelation 13:18. In the previous study above on

of human perfection; the culmination of human pride in independence
of God and opposition to His Christ. The Number 666 was a
secret symbol of the ancient pagan mysteries connected with Devil
worship.
And the triple 6 marks the culmination of man’s opposition to God in
the person of the coming Antichrist whose number is 666 as
recorded in Revelation chapter 13.
