Praying in the Spirit and With Understanding

1.     Luke 10:21 “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou has hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

2.     John 11:33, 38 “When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit (embrimaomai = sigh, groan; pneuma = spirit, Christ’s spirit), and was troubled (tarasso = to stir or agitate, trouble).  Jesus therefore again groaning in himself (embrimaomai = sigh, groan) cometh to the grave.”

3.     Romans 8:26-27 “Likewise (hosautos = in the same way, after the same like manner) the Spirit (pneuma = Holy Spirit) also (kai = also, even so, likewise, moreover) helpeth (sunantilambanomai = to take hold of opposite together, companionship, beside with, completeness, that is co-operated, together with, assist, help, denoting union, to take hold of, succor, to participate, partaker support) our infirmities (astheneia = feebleness, frailty, weakness, strengthless, ): for we know not (ido = to know, perceive, understand) what we should pray for (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, make prayer, pray earnestly for) as we ought (dei = as is necessary, as we must or should, from root deomai = to beg, petition, pray, make request): but the Spirit itself (pneuma = Holy Spirit; hautou = self, Himself) maketh intercession for us (huperentugchano = to intercede in behalf of, make intercession for, to entreat) with groanings (stenagmos = a sigh, groaning, from root stenazo = to sigh, pray inaudibly, groan; stenazo =in straits, sigh, pray inaudibly; stenos = standing close about; histemi = to stand, abide, hold up; tithemi = advise, commit, give, kneel down) which cannot be uttered (laleo = to talk, utter words, speak, say, unspeakable, unutterable, which cannot be uttered).  And he that searcheth (ereunao = inquiry, seek, investigate, search; ereo = utter, speak, say; rheo = a pouring forth, utter, speak, say, command; epo  to speak or say, tell) the hearts (kardia = the heart, thoughts, feelings, mind) knoweth (eido = to see, to know, be aware, consider, perceive, be sure, understand; horao = to discern clearly, perceive) what is the mind (phronema = inclination, purpose; phroneo = mind, opinion, mind, think; phren = feelings, understanding, mind) of the Spirit (pneuma = Holy Spirit), because he maketh intercession (entugchano = confer with, entreat, make intercession;) for the saints (hagios = pure, blameless, clean, perfect, consecrated, holy, saint) according to the will of God (kata = according to, distribution, intensity, more excellent, godly; theos = deity, supreme Divinity, God.”)

4.     I Corinthians 14:4 “He that speaketh (laleo = to talk, utter words, say; lego = lay forth, relate in words, discourse, utter, speak) in an unknown tongue (unknown not in text; glossa = tongue, language, one naturally unacquired) edifieth himself (oikodomeo = to be a house builder, construct, confirm, build, edify, embolden; oikodome = architecture, structure, edifying);”

5.     I Corinthians 14:14-15 “For if I pray (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, pray for, make prayer;) in an unknown tongue (glossa = tongue, language), my spirit (mou = of me, mine own, my; pneuma = human spirit moved by the divine Spirit) prayeth (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, pray for, make prayer), but my understanding (nous = intellect, mind, thought, feeling, will, understanding) is unfruitful (akarpos barren, without fruit).  What is it then?  I will pray (proseuchomai = same as above) with the spirit (pneuma =  human spirit moved by the divine Spirit), and I will pray (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, pray for, make prayer) with the understanding (nous = intellect, mind, thought, feeling, will) also (kai = too, likewise):”

6.     Ephesians 6:18 “Praying (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, pray for, make prayer) always (dia = channel of an act, through, always; pas = all, every, whole; kairos = occasion, that is, set or proper time, opportunity ) with all prayer (proseuchomai =  same as above) and supplication (deesis = petition, prayer request, supplication; punthanomai = to question, ascertain by inquiry; zeteo = to seek, seek after something hidden, desire, enquire for) in the Spirit (pneuma = Holy Spirit), and watching (agrupneo = to be sleepless, keep awake, watch) there unto with all perseverance (proskarteresis = persistency, perseverance; kartereo = to be strong, steadfast, patient, endure) and supplication (deesis = prayer, request, petition, supplication; deomai = to beg, pray, make request, beseech ) for all the saints (hagios = sacred, pure, blameless, holy, saint; hagnos = clean, innocent, perfect, chaste, modest clean, pure);”

7.     Jude 20 “But ye, beloved (agapetos = dearly, dear, beloved; agapao = to love as God loves), building up yourselves (epoikodomeo = to build upon, rear up, build thereon, upon; oikodomeo = to be a house builder, construct, confirm, embolden, edify) on your most holy (hagios = sacred, pure, blameless, holy, saint; hagnos = clean, innocent, modest, perfect, chaste clean, pure) faith (pistis = persuasion, conviction, truth, belief, faith; peitho = agree, assure, believe, have confidence, obey, persuade, trust, yield), praying (proseuchomai = to pray to God, supplicate, worship, make prayer) in the Holy Spirit (hagios = sacrede, pure, morally blameless, consecrated, holy, saint; hagnos = innocent, clean, modest, perfect, chaste, clean, pure).”
