CIRCUMCISION

OLD TESTAMENT

Hebrew

circumcise, circumcised, circumcision

mul   to cut off, away, around, circumcise

Genesis 17:10-14 “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; every man child among shall be circumcised (mul).  And ye shall circumcise (mul) the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.  And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised (mul) among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.  He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised (mul): and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.  And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised (mul), that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.”

Genesis 17:23-27 “And Abraham took Ismael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised (mul) the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.  And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised (mul) in the flesh of his foreskin.  And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised (mul) in the flesh of his foreskin.  In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised (mul), and Ismael his son.  And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised (mul) with him.”

Genesis 21:4 “And Abraham circumcised (mul) his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.”

Genesis 34:15, 17, 22, 24 “But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcise (mul): But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised (mul); then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.  Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised (mul), as they are circumcised (mul).  And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised (mul), all that went out of the gate of his city.”

Exodus 12:44, 48 “But every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised (mul) him, then shall he eat thereof.  And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised (mul), and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised (arel) person shall eat thereof.”

Leviticus 12:3 “And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised (mul).”

Deuteronomy 10:16Circumcise (mul) therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff necked.”

Deuteronomy 30:6 “And the Lord thy God will circumcise (mul) thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.”

Joshua 5:2-8 “At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, make thee sharp knives, and circumcise (mul) again the children of Israel the second time.  And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised (mul) the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.  And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise (mul): All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised (mul).  For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.  And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised (mul): for they were uncircumcised (arel), because they had not circumcised (mul) them by the way.  And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising (mul) all the people that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.”

Jeremiah 4:4Circumcise (mul) yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskin of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.”

Jeremiah 9:25-26 “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will punish all them which are circumcised (mul) with the uncircumcised (arel); Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the uttermost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised (arel), and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised (arel) in the heart.”

NEW TESTAMENT

Greek

circumcise, circumcised, circumcision

peritemno   to cut around, circumcise

Luke 1:59 “And it came to pass , that on the eight day they came to circumcise (peritemno) the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.  And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.”

John 7:22 “Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision (peritemno), (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise (peritome) a man.”

Acts 7:8 “And he gave him the covenant of circumcision (peritome) : and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised (peritemno) him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.”

Acts 11:1-4, 5-16, 17-18 “And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the gentiles had also received the word of God.  And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision (peritome) contended with him, saying, Thou wentest  in to men uncircumcised (akrobustia), and didst eat with them.  But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them...(See verses 5-16)…Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, then hath God also to the gentiles granted repentance unto life.”

Acts 15:1, 5, 24 “And certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, except ye be circumcised (peritemno) after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.  When therefore Paul and Barnabas and no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about his question.  But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, that it was needful to circumcise (peritemno) them, and to command them to keep the Law of Moses.  Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcises, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:  ”

Acts 16:3 “Timotheus would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised (peritemno) him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.”

Acts 21:21 “And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise (peritemno) their children, neither to walk after the customs.”

I Corinthians 7:18-20 “Is any man called being circumcised (peritemno)?  Let him not become uncircumcised (epispaomai).  Is any called in uncircumcision (akrobustia)?  Let him not be circumcised (peritemno).  Circumcision (peritome) is nothing, and uncircumcison (akrobustia) is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.  Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.”

Galatians 2:3-7 “But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised (peritemno): And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: to whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.  But of those who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision (akrobustia) was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision (peritome) was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision (peritome), the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)”

Galatians 5:1-14 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised (peritemno), Christ shall profit nothing.  For I testify again to every man that is circumcised (peritemno), that he is a debtor to do the whole law.  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.  For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision (peritome) availeth anything, nor uncircumcison (akrobustia); but faith which worketh by love.  Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?  This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.  A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.  And I brethren, if I yet preach circumcision (peritome), why do I yet suffer persecution?  Then is the offence of the cross ceased.  I would they were even cut off which trouble you.  For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Galatians 6:12-18 “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised (peritemno); only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.  For neither they themselves who are circumcised (peritemno) keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised (peritemno), that they may glory in your flesh.  But god forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision (peritome) availeth anything, nor uncircumcison (akrobustia), but a new creature.  And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.  From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.  Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”

Colossians 2:10-11 “And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised (peritemno) with the circumcision (peritome) made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision (peritome) of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision (akrobustia) of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or the Sabbath days: which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body of Christ.”

peritome      circumcision

John 7:22-23 “Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision (peritome); (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers ;) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise (peritemno) a man.  If a man on the Sabbath day receive circumcision (peritome), that the Law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the Sabbath day?”

Acts 7:8 “And he gave him the covenant of circumcision (peritome): and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.”

Acts 10:45 “And they of the circumcision (peritome) which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 11:2-3 “And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision (peritome) contended with him, saying, thou wentest in to men uncircumcised (akrobustia), and didst eat with them.”

Romans 2:25-29 “For circumcision (peritome) verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision (peritome) is made uncircumcision (akrobustia).  There if the uncircumcision (akrobustia) keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision (akrobustia)be counted for circumcision (peritome)?  And shall not his uncircumcision (akrobustia) which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision (peritome) dost transgress the law?  For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision (peritome), which is outward in the flesh:  But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision (peritome) is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of man, but of God.”

Romans 3:1-2, 28-31 “What advantage then hath the Jew? Or what profit is there of circumcision (peritome)?  Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God… (See 3-27)…Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.  Is he the god of the Jews only?  Is he not also of the Gentiles?  Yes, of the gentiles also: Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision (peritome) by faith, and uncircumcision (akrobustia) through faith.  Do we then make void the law through faith?  God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”

Romans 4:9-12 “Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision (peritome) only, or upon the uncircumcision (akrobustia) also?  For we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.  How was it then reckoned?  When he was in circumcision (peritome), or in uncircumcision (akrobustia)?  Not in circumcision, (peritome) but in uncircumcision (akrobustia).  And he received the sign of circumcision (peritome), seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised (akrobustia): that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised (akrobustia); that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: And the father of circumcision (peritome) to them who are not of the circumcision (peritome) only, but who walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised (akrobustia).”

Romans 4:13-18 (The word circumcise does not appear but the passage is pertinent)“For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.  Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, so shall thy seed be.”

Romans 15:8-12 “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision (peritome) for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.  And again he saith, Rejoice, ye gentiles, with his people.  And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.  And again, Esaias saith, there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.”

I Corinthians 7:19Circumcision (peritome) is nothing, and uncircumcision (akrobustia) is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.”

Galatians 2:1-10 “Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.  And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preached among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.  But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised (peritemno): and that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might being us into bondage: To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.   But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: But contrawise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcison (akrobustia) was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision (peritome) was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision (peritome), the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)  And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave tome and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision (peritome).  Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.  ”

Galatians 2:11- 21 “But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.  For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision (peritome).  And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.  But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, if thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the gentiles to live as do the Jews?  We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we see to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin?  God forbid.  For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.  For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.  I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, the Christ is dead in vain.”

Galatians 5:6, 11 “For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision (peritome) availeth anything, nor uncircumcision (akrobustia); but faith which worketh by love.  And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision (peritome), why do I yet suffer persecution?  Then is the offence of the cross ceased.”

Galatians 6:15 “For in christ Jesus neither circumcision (peritome) availeth anything, nor uncircumcision (akrobustia), but a new creature.”

Ephesians 2:11 “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision (akrobustia) by that which is called the Circumcision (peritome) in the flesh made by hands;”

Philippians 3:3 “For we are the circumcision (peritomi), which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

Colossians 3:11 “Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision (peritome) or uncircumcision (akrobustia), Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.”

Colossians 4:10-11 “Artistarchus my fellow prisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister’s son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision (peritomi).  These only are my fellow workers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.”

Titus 1:10 “For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision (peritome):”

akrobustia  through uncircumcision

Romans 4:11 “And he received the sign of circumcision (peritome), a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised (akrobustia): that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:”
